As an African American woman who grew up in Europe, I have always been curious about different cultures, languages, and traditions. As a social worker, I’m ethically bound to work with people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have intersecting marginalized identities. Like many of you, I didn’t acquire that skill in graduate school! It was years later, after struggling to engage students in a required diversity course that I sought out mentors and master diversity trainers to help me gain the skills needed to effectively engage others in working through differences that often lead to conflict.
